We rapidly mobilised to implement a comprehensive strategy, enhancing the V&A’s maintenance and energy efficiency, as well as its conservation efforts.
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London encompasses 145 galleries, all requiring strict environmental controls. Vertex was awarded the contract to oversee the MEPH and fabric maintenance, swiftly mobilising the project while maintaining essential operational knowledge through a 100% TUPE success.
Our bespoke maintenance strategy involved thoroughly reviewing and enhancing existing work practices and technological platforms to address system inefficiencies. The integration of modern systems and protocols has streamlined operations, significantly reduced costs and improved the museum’s environmental impact.
Vertex continues to explore future improvements, including the potential integration of an advanced analytics platform to optimise maintenance regimes and improve sustainability.
Key challenges and solutions
- Lighting upgrades: Installing energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the museum’s galleries, which cut energy consumption by approximately 40% and reduced UV light exposure – vital for artefact preservation.
- Advanced control sensors: Enabling adaptive monitoring and management of the museum environment, fully integrated with the museum’s Building Management System (BMS) to ensure artefact longevity.
- Compliance and safety: Maintaining a zero-harm environment, with all operations aligned with strict health and safety standards, including ROSPA and Safe Contractor accreditations. The team’s regular engagement in audits and compliance training ensures adherence to the ISO 9001 quality management standards.
